Summary:
Under the supervision of the Manager of Probation/Juvenile Services, investigates the background of delinquent youths in order to assist the court in determining the most proper disposition of each juvenile case.
Supervises and counsels juvenile probationers and their parents in attempts to modify or eliminate behavioral problems.

1.
Investigates assigned cases.
Contacts schools, enforcement agencies, social service agencies and continues contacts with the youth and the family.
Prepares reports in order to assist the court in determining the most appropriate disposition of each case.
Recommends probationary terms, treatment, educational plans or other action.
2.
Administers assessments and develops and implements individual treatment plans for assigned youths designed to meet short and long-term rehabilitative goals.
Reviews progress with supervisor and modifies the plan as appropriate.
3.
Supervises juveniles placed on probation.
Visits youths regularly at home, school and the office to monitor and evaluate their progress.
4.
Counsel parents of assigned juveniles, providing advice on how to improve the family situation and resolve conflicts.
Refers families to other agencies to further assist them in dealing with family problems.
5.
Maintains regular contacts with professional and social service agencies that provide juveniles with counseling, testing and guidance.
Evaluates feedback on youths from outside agencies.
Confers regularly with police, schools, detention facilities and victims regarding progress/actions of youths.
6.
Prepares reports of cases with recommendations for the court.
Attends hearings of assigned juveniles and responds to questions of the court.
Assumes responsibility for ensuring the disposition of case is carried out and court orders are enforced.
7.
Obtains and provides registration information on juvenile sex offenders to the Michigan State Police.
8.
Responsible for responding to crises that may occur with youth and their families that come to the attention of the Court, whether during the operation of the Court or after hours.
9.
Participates in rotation for on-call responsibilities.
10.
May assist with special programs of the court and referring agencies, making transportation and other logistical arrangements.
11.
May be responsible for coordinating services provided youths housed at the Youth Home.
Evaluates needs of minors, arranges services and educational placement and participates in tutoring and activities for youths.
12.
Assists Teen Court Director.
Organizes and facilitates educational lessons and materials for school participants.
Supervise Teen Court probationers and maintains appropriate information in case files and required reporting.
13.
Provides transportation for youth to and from placement facilities, court programming activities, evaluations, and/or other appointments or activities as needed.
14.
Administers drug screens to youth both on a regular and random basis, using both oral swabs and urine screens.
15.
Assists Youth Empowered to Succeed (YES) program coordinator.
Provides direct instruction to participants.
16.
Provides services, as approved for funding by the State Child Care Fund office, to youth in in-home care programs and out-of-home placements such as the county-operated facility or residential treatment programs.
17.
Cooperates with and maintains contact with representatives of other organizations and agencies to exchange and update information on resources, available services, individual case investigation; development of plans for success of the student.
18.
Provides special services to youth in in-home care programs and out-of-home placements.

19.
Facilitates establishment of constructive relationships between students, school staff, the court system and human service agencies.
Serves as a positive role model and mentor.
20.
Participates in training and ongoing education as directed by the Manager of Probation/Juvenile Services.
21.
Performs other duties as directed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum
Qualifications:

Requirements include the following:
Bachelor's Degree in social work, psychology, sociology, criminal justice, counseling, or related field and one year of progressively more responsible case work experience in the criminal justice system, preferably dealing with delinquent juveniles.
The county, at its discretion, may consider an alternative combination of formal education and work experience.
Certification by the Michigan Judicial Institute within one year of hire.
Michigan Vehicle Operator's License.
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of State of Michigan juvenile law, juvenile welfare and development, social work, and counseling.
Considerable knowledge of the juvenile justice system programs and practices, counseling juveniles, working with at risk juveniles and families, managing juvenile case and petition files, creating and implementing treatments plans for juveniles and applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations.
Skill in assembling and analyzing data, and preparing comprehensive and accurate reports.
Skill in effectively communicating ideas and concepts orally and in writing.
Demonstrated ability to maintain professional integrity and respect for those requiring juvenile services including the ability to lead and earn respect.
Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with county employees, contractors to the county, representatives of other governmental units, professional contacts, elected officials, children and families and the public.
Ability to assess situations, solve problems, work effectively under stress, within deadlines, and in emergency situations.
Skill in the use of office equipment and technology, including Microsoft Suite applications, database entry and the ability to learn new software programs applicable to the position.
Ability to respond to emergencies or service needs on a 24-hour basis.
